API & Developers

Friday, February 29th, 2008

We’re brainstorming on implementing a public API and what features people would want the most.

It could be getting information of what songs a user is playing all the way to streaming the music from your personal collection via an API to any device you want.

Sound interesting? Let us know how you might want to access JukeFly via an API!

New release!

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

Includes the following bug fixes / new features :

Web client -

  • Added persistent logins. Now you don’t have to keep logging in to JukeFly every-time you restart the browser, just click the”Remember Me” checkbox.
  • Added music / playlist privacy settings in the Profile tab.
  • Added countries and states / provinces information to the personal info pane. Everybody can finally tell us where they are from :)
  • Improved friends music feature. Hopefully this will make listening to your friends’ music a lot easier - so invite your friends to JukeFly or start making friends on JukeFly :) Check the new “Friend Music” sub-tab on the main “Music” tab page.
  • Added genres to the songs filter, so now you can search by genre
  • Fixed some bugs where the playing song would not go to the next song

PC Server -

  • Fixed a parsing issue where invalid characters were not being handled properly by the tag parser, this caused syncing to get stuck.

We are continuing to make improvements to the friends’ music feature. If you have any suggestions please let us know.

Removable Disk Support

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

We now handle removable disks gracefully now. Previously it would remove your music from the site when you disconnected the disk.

Removable disks must be polled, currently a 3 minute interval to check for changes where fixed disks are monitored in real time for changes. Keep this in mind when modifying your music library on removable disks.

Don’t download the PC Server again.  (Infact, because of a caching bug we are working on, you may get an older version).  — Instead, just go ahead and add your music.  You should see now when you disconnect your removable disk your music list on JukeFly stays intact.

Let us know if you have problems with it by using the Feedback tab.

Thanks!

New Database Server Installed!

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

Our new database server is installed! The site should be a lot snappier now all the time. Please let us know if you experience any problems!

Database Fixed!

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

We had some serious problems today. Our database server has some bad memory or a bad hard disk that caused our database to become corrupted. We restored from a backup database, but it just became corrupted again because of the faulty hardware.

We’re now running off of a temporary database server until our new system arrives on Thursday. Unfortunately, we lost about 50 users accounts today due to bad hardware.

If your user account is gone:

  1. Uninstall the PC Server (On Windows: Start -> All Programs -> JukeFly -> Uninstall)
  2. Create a new account on JukeFly.com and follow the standard sign up procedure

If you were syncing music today (Feb 19th) and think your music might be out of sync:

  1. On the “Profile Tab” of JukeFly.com, click the red X (delete) the path that is out of sync.
  2. Select “Add Folder” on the Profile page and add your folder back.

We greatly apologize for the inconvenience. It has been a really rough day for us trying to work around faulty hardware for our new service. We will be putting in measures so that this never happens again.

UPDATE: We have narrowed down the issue to a faulty 3ware 8000 RAID controller. So anybody else thinking of using this RAID controller please beware :)

Syncing Is Very Slow & Last.FM Request

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

We are getting many more users per hour than we anticipated, which is great news, except it means syncing will be very slow until our new servers arrive which is scheduled for Thursday Feb 21st. We apologize for the slow inconvenience until then.

Normally syncing runs at 1,000 songs per minute, but you are probably seeing around 100 songs per minute and perhaps less.

We’ve had a lot of requests for Last.FM support, which we think is a great idea to scrobble to them.  We’re looking into it now.

The PC Server scan feature is also too aggressive, we’re looking into getting confirmation from the user before adding the folders, and being a bit less aggressive.   Right now it only matches outside of your Windows/Program Files/Temp/Recycle Bin directories and only music files bigger than 1 megabytes, but we’re getting reports its still finding a lot of non-music related files such as sounds and samples from installed video games (installed outside Program Files).

We’re working on it all though, so check back with the blog for updates! :-)

JukeFly got LifeHacked!

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

Phew - its been a long night - oh its already daytime :). Well, its been a really productive 24 or so hours. For those of you who are not LifeHacker readers - JukeFly was the Featured Download on LifeHacker yesterday (thanks to our user marshallmellow for tipping the editors). This got us a lot of users - and tons of music synced - 3.2 million and growing fast :). Anyway, the sudden spurt created a temporary slow-down of the site - for which we apologize. But Jeff came up with a great fix that will throttle the syncing, so that the site is fully functional - even with our limited hardware - so that was a lifesaver :). We think we can handle the load till we get the new hardware sometime during this week.
The major fixes/features in this release -

  • For all the users who wanted better sorting of the songs (almost everybody - including us :)) - you can now sort by artist, album, track, genre and song.
  • Shuffle play is fully functional
  • Fixed the user search - you can now find yourself on the Community page

We are working hard on lotsa fixes/features that you guys have been requesting - so stay tuned :).

P.S. The server is under significant load right now, if your searches for your music doesn’t return results, try re-typing your search again to retry.  This will be resolved shortly, we’re aware and working on it.

Site Much More Responsive!

Friday, February 15th, 2008

We tweaked our load balancer so that the surge of users indexing their music doesn’t take all system power away from people just trying to use the site and sign up. The whole thing will be even faster soon with our upcoming hardware upgrades.
